What to see and do

With the wide range of parks and gardens spanning the city, Bangalore has acquired the nickname of Garden City. Well-known for its exotic flora and fauna, the Lal Bagh Botanic Gardens is a must-visit. This is a splendid garden where visitors are able to stroll and unwind and enjoy a breathtaking view of the famous tree-lined lake. Nature lovers should visit the Hebbal Lake and Koli Hills, both homes to exotic flora and fauna. Good views await --but remember not to feed the monkeys that roam the area! These places are easily accessible by taxis and auto-rickshaws.

Another attraction is the Shiva Statue of Bangalore. The statue is about 65 feet tall and depicts Lord Shiva in a meditative posture. The statue is best viewed at dusk. Make a wish by chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” 7 times before throwing a coin into the pond situated in front of the statue. Alternatively, the Bull Temple located in Basavanagudi is a typical Dravidian-style temple and is famous for its mammoth bull statue carved from a single boulder. Alternatively, head to the Venkataramaswamy temple, situated next to the summer palace of Tipu Sultan.

From swanky high-class restaurants to street stalls, there is definitely something for everyone at MG Road. Steaming hot Gobi Manchurian, idlis, 99 different varieties of dosa and chaats will have you experiencing food coma by the time you’re done. If you’re looking to have an amazing night, head to Fuga, The Island and The 13th Floor. Enjoy your meal with music at The Skybar, The Humming Tree and Aqua Bar.

Getting Around

Visitors can take the buses operated by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation from the airport to various destinations around the city. This is the cheapest and most convenient way to travel to the heart of the city. If you are feeling tired after the flight, flag a taxi from the taxi stand outside the airport terminals. Alternatively, you can take the shared taxis which are convenient and cheaper than a regular taxi. If you are in a hurry and ready to splurge, try requesting for the helicopter services offered by Deccan Aviation and Birdie.

Within the city, you can explore the different attractions by using the Bangalore Metro which cuts down the time taken to get from one end of Bangalore to another. Taking the bus is another option but it may be difficult if you don’t know the system and the routes well. The auto-rickshaw is the preferred mode of transport as they are plentiful and easily available.
